The image
A figure assembled from parts rather than described, with sketches, lists and diagrams crowding the wall behind it as though the notebook page had become the picture. The face is the only area modelled with care, and the clothing is a map of colour blocks.
Where it comes from
This way of painting people comes out of the street rather than the studio: a figure built like a tag, surrounded by writing that behaves like annotation. The marks on the wall behind the sitter are part of the portrait, because in that language a person is also what is written around them. What looks hurried was deliberate, and the layering is the evidence.
On the wall
It brings colour and noise into a room, so it suits a studio, a hallway or a living room with industrial furniture. Because the composition is dense and the marks are small, it rewards being seen close up as well as from across the room. In a group it should be the piece that sets the volume.
In company
If you want company for it, the Iconic collection is where to look.Avoid hanging it beside a second dense composition, where the two would read as clutter rather than conversation.
