Matisse posters: colour as the whole subject
Henri Matisse (1869–1954) spent sixty years reducing painting to its essentials — flat colour, a drawn line, and the shapes in between. He was the leading figure of the Fauves in 1905, when colour stopped describing things and started carrying the picture. When illness made standing at an easel difficult, he turned to cutting painted paper with scissors, and those late works became some of the most recognisable images in modern art.
What is in this collection
- The paper cut-outs — Découpés Paris, Papier Découpés, Papers Découpés and the cut-outs exhibition poster. Planes of pure colour, cut rather than painted, with no shading anywhere.
- The Nice years — Nice and the landscape print: the light of the south of France, where Matisse lived from 1917.
- Exhibition posters — the retrospective poster, the 1946 exhibition, the exhibition print and the sculpture show.
- The quieter works — Matisse Blue, for a room that needs one calm field of colour.
How to choose one
The cut-outs are the boldest: large flat shapes in blue, red, yellow and black, and they need space around them — one is enough on a wall. The Nice and landscape prints are softer and suit a hallway or a bedroom. The exhibition posters are the quiet, typographic option.
Matisse pairs with Picasso, the obvious comparison and a real one: the two men spent their lives looking at each other's work. For a calmer pairing, hang a cut-out next to a Scandinavian interior print, where the colour does the work and the frame stays out of the way.
Sizes, paper and delivery
Every poster is printed on Hahnemühle paper and is available in sizes from 30×40 to 70×100 cm, plus A3 and A2. The cut-outs hold up at large sizes; the exhibition posters work small. Orders leave the studio within 24 business hours, delivery in the EU takes 3–5 working days (3–6 outside the EU), and every parcel is tracked.
Why Matisse survives on a wall
His pictures do not need context. There is no story to follow and no detail to decode — only balance, which is exactly what a room asks for. That is why a Matisse poster works in a flat with nothing else on the walls.
