Kandinsky posters: the pictures that stopped describing the world
Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was born in Moscow and spent the 1920s and early 1930s teaching at the Bauhaus, first in Weimar and then in Dessau. He is one of the painters who took the decisive step into abstraction: instead of painting objects, he painted circles, lines and colour relationships, and treated them as a subject in their own right. His writing on colour and form shaped how the twentieth century thought about both.
What is in this collection
- The abstract works — Yellow-Red-Blue, Violet, Four Parts, Color Study and Blau in Rund und Spitz. Circles, diagonals and sharp angles held in balance: the Bauhaus years at their most confident.
- Small Worlds — Small Worlds I and Small Worlds IV come from the print portfolio in which Kandinsky compressed his whole visual language into small, dense compositions.
- Exhibition posters — the 1958 and 1961 museum posters, with the typography of the shows they were made for.
How to choose one
In a white or grey room, one of the big colour compositions is enough on its own — do not hang anything next to it. In a warmer interior, the Small Worlds prints work better: they are denser, blacker, and read as drawing rather than as colour. The exhibition posters are the quiet option and the easiest to hang in a hallway or a study.
Kandinsky pairs most naturally with Paul Klee — they taught together at the Bauhaus and their work is usually shown side by side — and with the Bauhaus posters, which share the same typographic language.
Sizes, paper and delivery
Every poster is printed on Hahnemühle paper and is available in sizes from 30×40 to 70×100 cm, plus A3 and A2. Large formats suit a single composition on an empty wall; small formats suit a group of prints. Orders leave the studio within 24 business hours, delivery in the EU takes 3–5 working days (3–6 outside the EU), and every parcel is tracked.
Why abstract art works on a wall
A figurative picture asks whether you like the subject. An abstract one does not — it only asks whether the balance holds. That is why Kandinsky survives in rooms where a landscape poster would feel borrowed.
