The image
Bold tubular forms in strong colour, arranged so that they overlap and interlock, with black outlines holding each shape together. The composition is frontal and busy and the whole sheet looks assembled from machine parts rather than drawn from life.
Where it comes from
The poster commemorates a 1987 exhibition of Fernand Léger’s work and it reproduces the vocabulary he built between the wars: cylinders, pistons, pipes and flat colour, arranged with the confidence of engineering drawings. Léger argued that modern life could be painted with modern forms and the argument moved easily into advertising and poster design because the shapes reproduced cleanly at any size, which is also why his work has been quoted by graphic designers ever since.
On the wall
It brings colour and structure at once, so it suits a living room, a study or a hallway with strong furniture. Because the composition is dense and the outlines are heavy, it needs a plain wall around it. In a group it should be the piece that sets the volume.
In company
For a larger wall, the Geometric collection supplies the rest of the arrangement.Avoid hanging it beside soft watercolour, the contrast makes both look uncertain.
