The image
Dunes drawn as long soft ridges running to a low horizon, the sand in warm tones that shift from light at the crest to darker at the foot. There is no figure and no object and the composition is almost entirely ground and sky.
Where it comes from
The image is a tribute to Arrakis, the desert planet at the centre of the Dune saga, where sand behaves like weather and water is the measure of wealth. The books gave the desert a geography of its own, ridges, basins, storms and later film and print turned that geography into a visual language: a dune, a horizon, a colour that suggests heat without showing the sun.
On the wall
It brings warmth and quiet into a room, so it suits a living room, a study or a bedroom with pale walls. Because the composition is horizontal and empty, it holds a wide wall without adding clutter. In a group it should be the calmest piece.
In company
The rest of the Modern collection holds pieces from the same years and the same printing habits.Avoid hanging it next to a busy graphic, the emptiness is the point and needs protecting.
