The image
A racing car standing still while a driver climbs in, the crowd reduced to flecks of colour and the flags to quick strokes. The painting is loose and fast, and the two solid things on the sheet are the body of the car and the helmet, both in the same red against a crowd of softening tones.
Where it comes from
Endurance racing posters had to sell two ideas at once: the machine and the human effort of getting into it. That is why so many of them show the moment before the start rather than the race itself. Illustrators worked quickly and painted from the pit lane, which is why the crowds dissolve and the machinery stays sharp: attention follows what the painter actually knew.
On the wall
It suits a study, a workshop or a hallway with industrial furniture, where a scene in movement gives the wall direction. Because the composition is busy at the edges and still at the centre, it reads well from a distance. In a group it should be the piece that introduces action.
In company
If you want company for it, the Vintage collection is where to look.Avoid hanging it beside a tight close-up of a car, where the two scales would argue.
