The image
A landscape with a figure in the foreground holding a small camera, the scene behind reduced to bands of colour, the lettering set as a line across the lower third. The image is about the act of looking rather than about the place being looked at.
Where it comes from
Camera advertising between the wars sold memory rather than optics: take the picture, keep the day. Designers answered with a figure, a view and a short imperative and the formula worked so well that it survived into every holiday advertisement since, because the product was small and the promise was large.
On the wall
It suits a hallway, a study or a living room with warm furniture, where a scene with a figure can hold a wall. Because the composition is horizontal and open, it works above a desk or a low shelf. In a group it should be the piece that introduces movement.
In company
The Vintage collection gathers prints made for the same kind of wall.Avoid hanging it beside a second figure holding an object, the joke, if there is one, only works once and the horizon line should sit at eye level so the figure reads as looking rather than as posing.
