The image
A flamingo drawn in flat colour against a plain ground, the bird reduced to a curve of neck, a body and two thin legs. The lettering sits above and below in a manner that belongs to advertising rather than to natural history, and nothing in the sheet suggests a photograph.
Where it comes from
Zoos advertised themselves as places of wonder long before they described themselves as institutions of conservation, and their posters used the animal as a graphic device: one shape, one colour, one gesture. The approach belongs to the years when the illustrated poster was the main way a family decided where to spend a Sunday.
On the wall
It suits a kitchen, a child’s room or a hallway, where a single animal in flat colour makes sense and does not demand attention. Because the palette is limited, it tolerates strong wall colours. In a group it works as the lightest piece.
In company
Pairs well with other animal prints and with pale wood furniture, and it looks right at eye level or lower. In a group it should be the smallest element. If you want company for it, the Vintage collection is where to look.
