The image
A coastline with a promenade, palm trees drawn as a few dark strokes, the sea reduced to a band of blue and the sky to a lighter one. The lettering is large and set in a relaxed hand, and the composition opens outwards rather than holding a centre.
Where it comes from
The French Riviera sold itself after the war as a place of light rather than of monuments, and its posters answered with colour and air: sea, sun, flowers, a promenade. Designers worked in flat areas because the sheets were printed cheaply and read from a moving car, and the result was a graphic language that still defines how the coast is advertised.
On the wall
It behaves like a window, pulling the eye to the far side of a room. A hallway, a bedroom or a study suits it, particularly where walls are pale and furniture warm. Because the palette is bright and open, it holds a large wall without making the room feel full.
In company
The rest of the Travel collection holds pieces from the same years and the same printing habits. In a group it should be the lightest piece, with something quieter beside it.
