The image
A figure caught mid-movement, drawn with hard outlines and filled with flat colour, the lettering set loud and slightly tilted around him. The composition is frontal and crowded. There is no background, only the performer and the announcement.
Where it comes from
Soul and funk shows of the 1960s were announced with posters printed cheaply and pasted fast and designers answered with exactly what the music did: a figure in motion, colour that refuses to be polite and typography that behaves like a shout. The best of these sheets are studied now as graphic work, not only as memorabilia.
On the wall
It brings energy into a room, so it suits a studio, a hallway or a living room that can take colour. Because the composition is dense, it needs a plain wall around it. At a large size the figure becomes the room’s rhythm; at a small one it reads as a record sleeve.
In company
Pairs well with black-and-white photography and with industrial furniture and it looks right at eye level. In a group it should be the loudest piece. Avoid hanging it beside delicate prints, the contrast turns into a clash rather than a conversation. A second sheet from the Music collection will balance it rather than compete.
