The image
A blue field with the ghost of a body pressed into it: shoulders, a torso, the shape of a figure registered as an absence of paint rather than as a drawing. There is no outline and no background, and the whole sheet is one pigment at full strength.
Where it comes from
The image comes from a method in which models covered in pigment pressed themselves against paper while music played, so the result is a record of movement rather than a picture of a person. The colour was the subject: one pigment, registered under the artist’s own name, used without dilution or shading. That insistence on a single tone was an argument about what a painting could be when it gave up drawing entirely, and it made the colour itself the signature.
On the wall
It suits a modern interior, a study or a bedroom, where a single saturated field takes the place of decoration. Because the surface is one colour, it holds a large wall and still feels calm. In a group it should be the element that sets the temperature rather than the centre of attention.
In company
Printing of this period is what the Modern collection is made of.Avoid a second large field of colour in the same room, where two monochromes would cancel each other out.
