The image
A single field of blue, worked so that the surface is uneven: some areas denser, some almost transparent, edges soft where the colour stops. There is no subject and no frame within the frame, the picture is the colour and the way it was laid down.
Where it comes from
Monochrome painting asked a question that graphic design borrowed: how much can be removed before an image stops working. The answer, arrived at repeatedly through the twentieth century, was that a field of colour can hold a wall better than a picture can, because there is nothing in it to tire of.
On the wall
It suits a modern interior, a study or a bedroom, where colour can take the place of decoration. Because the surface is single and large, it holds a big wall and still feels quiet. In a group it should be the element that sets the temperature rather than the centre of attention.
In company
Pairs well with plain furniture and with photography in black and white and the rest of the graphic collection sits beside it without arguing. Avoid a second large field of colour in the same room, two monochromes on one wall cancel each other out.
