The image
A frame filled with repeating shapes seen as though through an opening, the pattern continuing past the edges of the view. Colour is flat and the drawing is schematic, so the sheet reads as a window onto a pattern rather than as a picture of a room.
Where it comes from
The composition belongs to Yayoi Kusama’s graphic work, in which a repeating field is used to build space without perspective. That device, instead of a horizon, an edge; instead of depth, repetition, appears throughout her prints and installations and was taken up by designers of the period, because it lets a flat sheet suggest a space continuing beyond itself. The effect is the same one her mirrored rooms produce at architectural scale.
On the wall
It suits a study, a hallway or a modern living room, where a patterned field gives a wall structure without adding objects. Because the palette is limited and the composition is even, it holds a large wall and still feels calm. In a group it should be the piece that sets the spacing.
In company
The Geometric collection is the obvious place to look for a neighbour.Avoid a second pattern of similar density, two fields on one wall flatten each other.
