The image
A cluster of blossoms filling the sheet, every petal patterned with small dots and every stem drawn as a curve, so that the flowers read as a single organism rather than as separate plants. The ground is bright and close in tone to the petals, which keeps the whole picture on one plane.
Where it comes from
Flowers appear throughout this artist’s work as a subject that can be simplified until it becomes a pattern and then repeated until it becomes a field. The device is the same one used in the all-over paintings: a mark, a rhythm, no centre. What changes is the motif, and the effect of the change is a picture that looks cheerful at a distance and obsessive up close, which is exactly the tension the work is built on.
On the wall
It brings colour and pattern into a room without adding objects, so it suits a kitchen, a child’s room or a hallway with pale walls. Because the composition is dense and even, it holds a large wall and still feels light. In a group it should be the piece that introduces colour.
In company
Colour is the organising principle of the Colorful collection.Avoid hanging it beside a second floral pattern, where the two would compete for the same idea.
