The image
A butterfly drawn over a dark ground, its wings built from rows of small pale dots rather than from outline or shading. Look long enough and the insect stops separating from the field behind it, because the same mark that describes the wing also covers the space around it.
Where it comes from
The dot has been the central device of this artist’s work since the 1950s, and it was never decoration: it was a way of dissolving a shape into its surroundings until the object and the room become one surface. The dark ground with a fine pale net is the same structure used in the large all-over paintings of the early 1960s, applied here to a single motif. The method is mechanical and meditative at once, which is why it survives being printed at poster scale.
On the wall
It suits a study, a bedroom or a hallway with plain walls, where a dark field and a fine pattern give the wall texture without adding objects. Because the marks are small, it rewards being seen close up as well as from a distance. In a group it should be the piece that introduces density.
In company
The Colorful collection is built around this one hue.Avoid hanging it beside a second dotted pattern, where the two would flatten into wallpaper.
