The image
Blocks of orange, yellow and purple cutting across the sheet at speed, with racing cars silhouetted low in the frame and the lettering compressed into the upper band. The composition is deliberately unstable, nothing is parallel to the edge and the colour is printed flat.
Where it comes from
The poster announces the Monterey Grand Prix of 1966, part of the Canadian-American Challenge Cup, the series that brought together the fastest sports cars of the decade and gave American road racing its widest audience. Designs for those events borrowed from op art and from the psychedelic palette of the moment: strong complementary colour, diagonal movement, photography reduced to silhouette. It was a deliberate break from the sober typography of European motorsport posters.
On the wall
It brings energy into a room, so it suits a studio, a hallway, a teenager’s room or a garage with strong furniture. Because the composition is loud and diagonal, it needs a plain wall around it. In a group it should be the piece that sets the rhythm.
In company
The Vintage collection is the obvious place to look for a neighbour.Avoid hanging it beside a second diagonal composition, two unstable graphics on one wall make the whole arrangement look tilted.
