The image
A valley town at the foot of snowy slopes, drawn in flat planes of colour with a road or a track leading the eye upward. The sky is pale and open, the lettering set small at the base. There is no figure in the foreground, the place itself is the subject.
Where it comes from
French Pyrenean resorts promoted themselves as health destinations long before skiing became a mass sport and their posters sold air, altitude and light as much as winter sports. The graphic style of these sheets, layered planes, cool colour, small type, came from railway advertising, which needed images that read quickly from a moving train.
On the wall
It shows best in a bright room, because the palette is cool and the snow depends on light. A hallway, a bedroom or a narrow wall between windows suits it. Because the composition is vertical and calm, it makes a small room feel taller rather than busier.
In company
Pairs well with other travel posters and with photography of mountains and it looks right above a low shelf. In a group it should be the quietest element. A pale wood frame keeps the pale sky reading as sky. The Vintage collection gathers prints made for the same kind of wall.
