The image
A figure in the clothes of the season, drawn with a light line and filled with flat colour, the lettering set around the silhouette rather than above it. The pose is turned slightly, so the garment reads as a shape and the sheet catches the eye from the side.
Where it comes from
Department stores used illustrated posters to announce each season long before photography took over fashion advertising and the illustrated sheet had one advantage: it could idealise the cut without lying about the fabric. The approach belongs to the decades when a new season was an event with a date rather than a continuous flow of drops.
On the wall
It suits a bedroom, a dressing room or a hallway, where a figure with movement can hold a wall. Because the composition is light and the palette is warm, it works in small rooms without crowding them. In a group it should be the piece that introduces colour.
In company
Pairs well with other fashion and advertising prints and with pale wood and the vintage collection holds pieces from the same years. In a group it should sit beside something quieter, the figure needs a plain surface to move against.
