The image
A cheese drawn as a simple wedge with a warm, saturated surface, a knife or a board suggested beside it and lettering arranged in a friendly arc. The colour does most of the work: the sheet is appetising before it is informative. There is no depth, no shadow and no background scene.
Where it comes from
Food advertising found its visual language early: show the product large, show it warm and show the human gesture, cutting, spreading, serving, because that is what makes a picture appetising. Posters of this kind were made for grocers and dairies and they were printed in the same flat colours as travel posters, for the same reason.
On the wall
It belongs where food happens: a kitchen, a dining corner, a pantry door. Because the palette is warm and the composition direct, it works in a small space without becoming heavy. In a group of food prints it provides colour and it reads at a glance from across the room.
In company
Pairs well with other vintage advertisements and with plain ceramics on an open shelf, where the warm tones pick up the glaze. Hang it at eye level rather than high, so the gesture reads. Avoid hanging it beside a very abstract print, the two languages do not help each other. For a larger wall, the Vintage collection supplies the rest of the arrangement.
